Fun Horse Facts from a Dude Ranch in the Eastern Sierras
Did you know horses have nearly 360-degree vision? Or that they communicate using subtle ear movements? These kinds of fun facts come to life here on the ranch! Whether you're planning your first family horseback vacation or returning for another stay at our Eastern Sierra dude ranch, here are some delightful and surprising facts about our four-legged friends that make the experience even more magical.
1. Your Heart Rate Syncs With Your Horse
It’s true! A study by the University of Arizona found that when a human stands within a few feet of a horse, their heart rhythms can synchronize. This phenomenon, known as “cardiac coherence,” shows how simply being in the presence of a horse can have calming, grounding effects. That’s part of what makes spending time with horses so powerful. At Hunewill Ranch, this connection grows as you ride, care for, and spend time with your horse. Guests love that your horse is selected just for you and your particular skill level and that you ride the same horse throughout your stay so that you can build a special bond.
2. Horses Are “Flight” Creatures
Horses are biologically wired to run from danger. That’s why a fluttering plastic bag or taking off your jacket while riding might make them jump, or “spook”. This flightiness is a natural defense mechanism that helped them survive in the wild for for millions of years. It’s also what makes them incredibly alert and sensitive partners. Knowing this, it’s important to stay aware while riding. Don’t worry, the horses at Hunewill Ranch are well-trained, and the wranglers will help guide you every step of the way during your stay here.
3. Horses Are Super Social
Our 170-horse herd here at Hunewill Ranch is like one big extended family. Horses groom each other, play together, and communicate all the time . Their social bonds are part of what makes ranch life so special. A fun past time for long-time guests is trying to name every horse on the ranch, and new wranglers are right there alongside them in the challenge!
4. Horses Use Their Ears Like Little Satellite Dishes
Horses can move each ear independently, almost like tiny radars, to pick up on sounds all around them. When their ears are flicking or swiveling, they’re listening to you and to all of their surroundings.
Not only that, their ears are an indicator of their mood and possible next actions. Ears straight up in the sky means the horse is content and attentive. Ears pinned back can be a sign that there’s something bothering them, so check your surroundings to correct the situation. Paying attention to their ears can actually help you understand what your horse is feeling.
5. Horses Have Incredible Memories
One of the sweetest parts of riding at a ranch like ours is forming a bond with your horse. Before you arrive, you’ll submit a Guest Information Form to help us understand your riding experience and from there, you’ll be assigned your horse for your stay.
Horses remember riders, so each day, you’ll create a deeper bond with your horse. And when you come back from your stay, don’t be surprised if you feel like old friends!
6. Horses Have Nearly 360 Degree Vision
Did you know horses can see nearly 360 degrees around them? The equine eye is one of the largest of any land mammal. With their eyes placed on the sides of their heads, horses have an incredible field of vision that allows them to spot movement almost anywhere. The exception is two small blind spots: one directly in front of their nose and one directly behind their tail.
7. Careful with Their Withers!
When mounting your horse, you'll notice a raised area between their shoulder blades called the withers. It's basically the horse equivalent of a bony shoulder. We ask riders to be gentle when climbing on, and we provide stepping stools and our helpful wranglers will make sure the mounting process is smooth and easy.
